Critical Care in Critical Moments

Chippenham Hospital's Level II Trauma Center, the first and only in Richmond and Central Virginia, is dedicated to delivering the best possible care during life's worst and most unexpected moments. We are experts in saving lives.

Trauma Centers treat patients with body wounds or shock produced by a sudden physical accident or violence. Examples include car accidents, workplace accidents, fire or smoke inhalation, an act of violence, a recreational accident or a sporting accident. These are injuries that require fast action from a team of experts. At Chippenham Hospital, we're trained in emergency resuscitation, surgery, and intensive care of most trauma patients. The first hour after an incident, the "Golden Hour of Trauma," is the most critical phase of care, during which quick intervention is most likely to prevent death.

EMS Response

Trauma care begins with an Emergency Medical Services (EMS) response. Having knowledge and experience in trauma care allows EMS technicians to make split-second life-saving decisions, treatment that can be seamlessly transferred to our ER staff. We work closely with our EMS partners to provide critical care before you even arrive, so we can best anticipate and prepare for your immediate needs.

We Exceed the Standards

Not every hospital can rise to the challenges of trauma treatment. Being a state-recognized Trauma Center means we voluntarily provide a higher level of care for the most critically injured patients. It also means our standards are reviewed and updated based on national standards published by the American College of Surgeons and the American College of Emergency Physicians.

Watch Dr. Raymond Makhoul, Trauma Medical Director at Chippenham Hospital, discuss our trauma program and what it means when you and your loved ones face unexpected crisis.

At Chippenham Hospital, we're prepared for trauma patients. Our specially-trained medical professionals with specialized equipment converge at the bedside of critically ill or injured patients when they arrive in the ER. We deliver care immediately, with a rapid and systematic protocol, ensuring these patients quickly receive the critical attention they need.
